Why?
In our dreams
one on each side of the road,
Spread them out over the pavement
hold down the corners,
Embedded in holes
the earth tamped down,
Contemplated the meaning for a moment
then went away shaking.
I KNEW YOU would come back,
scared and exhausted.
What’s wrong?
Come inside.
We need your help.
Times are such
I don’t know how much help I can be.
Our home… it’s gone,
gone completely.
A few weeks ago I tried blackout poetry for the first time.
BLACKOUT POETRY is a form of found poetry that involves taking an existing text and blacking out or obscuring most of it so that what remains results in a poem. In this way, it feels like the poem is writing you - reverse inspiration if you will.
The poem turned out better than I had expected having a structure and message similar to an intentional piece. Since I didn’t have a story to tell from the get-go, I can only interpret the poem in retrospect.
My interpretation: we lay our dreams down to pave the road of our life. Later on we may revisit these dreams, having reached our destination and ready to resume the things we set aside to get there. However the dreams have changed just as you have changed and those ideals then may never again align with who you are now. A bittersweet realization but often is the price for progress.
